GramLine® vs Colorbond®: What's the Difference?

If you're pricing a new steel fence around Moreton Bay, you've probably run into both names - GramLine® and Colorbond® - and wondered whether they're the same thing, competitors, or something in between. It's one of the questions we hear most at our Deception Bay warehouse, and the confusion is understandable, because the two brands are related but they're not the same kind of thing at all.

We stock both, so here's the honest, plain-English version.

Is GramLine® the same as Colorbond®?

No - and the difference is easier to remember than you'd think:

  • Colorbond® is a steel. It's the famous pre-painted steel made by BlueScope, one of Australia's largest manufacturers, produced to Australian Standards (AS 1397 and AS/NZS 2728) with multiple bonded layers of protection. Lots of different products are made FROM Colorbond® steel - roofs, gutters, sheds, and yes, fences.

  • GramLine® is a fencing system. It's a complete steel privacy fencing range - panels, posts, rails, plinths and gate components - manufactured by Gram Engineering, who have been making steel privacy fencing since 1984 and pioneered the category in Australia.

So when someone says "a Colorbond® fence," they mean a fence built from Colorbond® steel components. When someone says "a GramLine® fence," they mean Gram Engineering's fencing system. Both are pre-painted, high-tensile steel. The practical differences are in the profiles, the colour range, and the system components.

What makes GramLine® fencing different?

A few things stand out once you put the two side by side in our warehouse:

The sawtooth profile. GramLine®'s signature zig-zag "sawtooth" infill sheet was the first of its kind in the world for steel privacy fencing, introduced back in 1996. It's a distinctive look you'll recognise on fences all over Moreton Bay - and it adds rigidity to the panel, not just style.

The colour range. GramLine® runs the largest colour range in the steel privacy fencing industry - 31 colours, including original heritage colours from the 1980s that are no longer part of the standard Colorbond® palette. If you're matching an older fence or an established colour scheme, that heritage range can be the difference between "close enough" and "exact match."

The system parts. GramLine® is more than sheets: lattice extensions (GramLat™), gate stiles (SmartStile®), steel plinths for garden beds and slopes (Steel Plinth™), and pool-compliant options (Childgard™) all belong to the same engineered system, so everything fits together properly.

The warranty. GramLine® steel privacy fencing carries a written warranty against perforation by weathering - 10 years. Colorbond® steel products carry warranties backed by BlueScope.

When would you choose Colorbond® steel fencing?

Plenty of our customers do, and for good reasons: it's a household name, the standard colour palette matches popular Colorbond® roofing and gutter colours exactly, and it's a proven performer in Queensland conditions. If your roof, shed and gutters are already Colorbond® colours and you want the fence to match the set, staying in that palette is the simple play.

Worth knowing before you decide, though: GramLine® offers the same colour palette too - some shades just carry a different name, because certain colour names are registered trademarks. Colorbond®'s Monument®, for example, is called Coke in the GramLine® range. So matching your roof colour doesn't automatically lock you into one brand of fence.

That's exactly why we keep both in stock - not to talk you out of one and into the other, but so you can stand in front of both ranges, compare colours and profiles side by side, and pick what suits your property.

Who supplies Colorbond® fences in Brisbane?

We do - alongside our GramLine® range. Accolade Fencing is an authorised GramLine® supplier based in Deception Bay, and we've been supplying steel fencing across North Brisbane and Moreton Bay since 1985. We stock GramLine® and Colorbond® steel fencing, supply panels in kit form to your measurements, and deliver across Narangba, Morayfield, Caboolture, Burpengary, Beachmere and the wider region.

One thing to know about how we work: we're a manufacturer and supplier, not an installation company. We'll get your order packed as a ready-to-assemble kit and delivered (or ready for pickup), and if you need someone to put it up, we can point you to trusted local installers we've worked with for years.

Frequently asked questions

Is GramLine® cheaper than Colorbond® fencing? They're generally in the same ballpark - the price difference on a real quote usually comes down to panel height, colour choice, gates and delivery rather than the brand. Send us your measurements and we'll quote both so you can compare like for like.

Can I see both before I buy? Yes - both ranges are on display at our warehouse at 1/66 Kabi Circuit, Deception Bay. Open Monday to Thursday 7am-4pm and Friday 7am-2pm.

Do you install fencing? No - we manufacture and supply. We put your order together in kit form to your measurements, deliver across North Brisbane and Moreton Bay, and can refer you to trusted local installers.

Do GramLine® colours match Colorbond® colours? Many popular colours overlap - sometimes under a different name, since certain colour names are trademarked (GramLine®'s Coke is the equivalent of Colorbond®'s Monument®) - and GramLine® also keeps heritage colours that are no longer in the standard Colorbond® range. Bring a sample or photo and compare against both displays in our warehouse.

Ready to compare them in person? Visit us at 1/66 Kabi Circuit, Deception Bay, or call (07) 3204 9994 for a free quote on either range.
